Boken gavs ut i samband med att Nordstjernan firade sitt 100-årsjubileum 1990. Boken trycktes i en engelsk utgåva, som detta exemplar, samt i en svensk utgåva. Den svenska utgåvan såldes i bokhandeln.

In nineteenth-century Scandinavia, one of the main avenues to business success lay in shipping investment. This was the route that Axel Johnson followed in founding Nordstjernan ("North Star") in 1890.

Beginning with a single, rather inefficient steamer, the Annie Therese, the firm grew rapidly. In 1904 the so-called "Johnson Line" inaugurated the first Swedish liner service to South America, thus beginning an era in which it was consistently in the forefront of innovation in Swedish shipping. In 1912, for example, the company took possession of the Suecia, Sweden's first motor ship. Later it pioneered in the development of refrigerated vessels and the installation of cold-storage facilities on ships, and after World War II became the first shipping company to adopt the revolutionary Pielstick engine (on which it also acquired a production license). The shipping operation remained until the 1970s the backbone of Nordstjernan, which in the interim grew into one of the largest diversified companies in Scandinavia. Even in the 1980s, with its partial ownership of the Silja Line, shipping remained an important component of the organisation's activities.

Until the mid-1980s, Nordstjernan remained a family-owned and operated firm under the leadership of three remarkable, if domineering, leaders. It is largely around these three individuals - Axel Johnson, Sr., Axel Ax:son Johnson (the "Consul General"), and Axel Ax:son Johnson (the "Engineer") - that the authors have chosen to organize their book.

The result is an interesting volume which certainly successfully conveys the feelings of those who ran the business. Many handsome photographs and illustrations.
